What Members Thought

For me, the worth of Virginia Reeve's novel is how she explores the ideas of actions and their consequences, crime and punishment, guilt, responsibility, rehabilitation and forgiveness with such thoroughness that living itself is presented as a continuous grappling with them. The focus of sheer labor isn't an escape from dealing with moral responsibilities. Family loyalty and love are struggles with expectation and guilt.

This story of a man, obsessed with electricity, who is imprisoned because of an accidental killing is solid. It's not a WOW book, but a good read. The writing is good, so are the main characters and although the setting is 1930's Alabama, you could easily mistake this as 2016 America (for me this is good). In essence this is a book about time and family relations. It won't rock your world but it will give you a satisfying couple of hours. ...more

This is the first of the Man Booker longlist nominees that I've picked up for 2016, and as much as I hate to use such a simple descriptor, it was... just okay.
