Messy storytelling, in such a keenly smart way! The story here of our main character is never fully realized until the end of the novel, but what we do get are letters and flashbacks that bring us up to speed on his life. Told from the perspective of a poor young man, who made his way into service by being a driver for his rich employer, we gain a greater perspective of the cultural, political, and social problems facing modern India. It is not until the end of the novel, however, that everythin ...more

The story of this book was interesting enough but the writing just wasn't great. A quick read for the Tube but not necessarily worthy of all the praise. ...more

I did not know what I was getting into when I read this book. I had seen that it was short-listed for the Booker award, and since my friend just purchased it, I thought it would be good time to give it a run. "If you are tired of Indian novels built on a blend of saffron and saris then Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger (2008) may just be the antidote required. It’s take on modern India is one more grounded in reality than romantic idealism, straddling the thin line between the historical hangovers of British rule and ingrained caste system with the thriving industry of entrepreneurship now prevalent in outsourced business, such as information technology and call centres."

The dark side of the Indian economic boom. Fascinating main character, if you can get past his nastiness. Lots of issues to ponder. A great discussion book for an asian history or anthro class.
