Here are three useful things to know about naked mole rats:

1. They are a little bit rat.
2. They are a little bit mole.
3. They are all naked.

Except... for Wilbur.
Wilbur is the naked mole rat exception. In fact, you could say that Wilbur is a little bit weird.
You know what is so weird about Wilbur?
He likes to get dressed.
Imagine! A naked mole rat... who isn't naked!
None of the other naked mole rats can understand it. You don't see them running around wearing clothes, now do you? So what's up with

I do like those naked mole rats! This is a great story about individuality and finding yourself. It's also a great jumping off point to start some animal research. I love using this story as a read aloud and then doing a bit of quick online research with second graders. NMRs are strange animals and kids enjoy learning about their unusual habits and appearance.

Recommended for grades 1 and 2.

Oh, Mo. How this pains me. To give Mr. Mo Willems 3-stars breaks my darn heart. This just didn't have that ... whatever it is that almost all of Willems books have. I'm going to go curl up with Knuffle Bunny and Edwina, now. ...more

I guess I have high standards for Mo Willems. It was cute and quirky, but not so silly.

I was worried that this might be a little long for my storytime, but it held both groups' attention. The "Eeeeeewwwww!"s and "Yuck!"s ensured it was a success.

A naked mole rat who likes clothes doesn't fit in until he asks "Why not." Grand-pah thinks seriously about everything and makes a proclamation to the colony. 12/5/11

This has been really well received this winter. I've used it for all my public story times, class visits and outreach.

I am still a complete Mo Willems fan...but I have to embrace that nobody is perfect and that occasionally there will be some books my him that I just don't connect with. This little bizarre book is one of them but I will continue to giggle and adore my way through any and every Piggy and Gerald and Pigeon and Knufflebunny book that comes my way! Just skip the naked mole rats... ...more
