This is a beautiful telling of the 9/11 Survivor Tree’s story depicting relentless strength. The vertical book orientation accentuates the tree’s shape as well as that of the towers and giving the hope that the future's only direction is growth upwards and downwards into the cross-sectioned ground. Recently there have been quite a few picture books to come out about the 9/11 Survivor Tree, so it takes a lot to make each one stand out. With this book, what stands out is when the single turn of a page makes you gasp and leave you speechless, you know you've experienced something special.

I liked both the illustrations and the text, but I think I would have liked more direct discussion about 9/11 in it. I am still listening to The Oral History of 9/11 so I can appreciate the small details the author and illustrator included. "The perfect blue sky exploded," with papers scattering among the smoke and flame is exactly how the reports described it. ...more
