With brightly-colored gouache illustrations and the constant reminder that Native Americans haven't disappeared into the misty past as might be surmised from history books, this picture book states that "We are still here?" (p. 5), a refrain that might seem to state the obvious but is actually a rallying call of sorts. The information presented here is important as a supplement to the current social studies curriculum in schools, and it's shared here through the presentations of 12 students on v ...more

If I were a classroom teacher in 3rd grade and above, I would definitely have this book in my classroom to help teach the history of Native American peoples and tribes in the United States. The content was good, explaining historical interaction between Native Americans and the US Government (and all the ways the government betrayed the Native Americans). It was told in the form of student presentations, which was a weird framing device, but also provided small bits of information about each event, which makes it a better fit for kids. Not a huge fan of the illustrations.

3.5 on this one for now. I love this author. I love the message that Native people are STILL here...have always been here, and the back matter is well done. I didn't find the presentation format engaging but will share with the intended audience and revise my rating based on their interactions. ...more

So many important truths discussed in this book. I would use this with older elementary/middle school students as a jumping off point in learning more. (And there is SO much for many of us to learn!)
