Lovely watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil illustrations in this picture book[3.5 for me] accompany relevant and ageless lines about the connections among various parts of the Earth and its living creatures. Written in 1983, the poem still has significance today as readers are urged to keep in mind their birth and family members as well as how important nature is. Incredible collaboration between the U.S. poet laureate and a Caldecott medalist. I was especially impressed how the colors "developed" from only shades of red, black and white to all the primary and secondary colors. I think this book has a shot at the 2024 medal.
