What an exceptional novel. The first time I read it some 7 years ago, I gave it 4 stars. This time 5. I savored every line. It's written so beautifully with such vivid rich descriptions. Also such a timely novel given the current political climate. So many read the classic dystopian novels 1984 and Brave New World (as I just did again this past month), but this book is written IMHO so much better and considers gender as a central focus. My heart skips a beat remembering reading this book. Not a beat of love, but of fear for humankind (and particularly womankind) because I know that ID cards aren't that far away, and if they're not far away, then segregation by fertility can't be much further.

What a terrifying and all too possible dystopian future.
My girlfriends at work, all in the English dept (I'm Social Studies), kept telling me that I would love this book. I bought it and put it on my shelf and there it stayed for months. The mood has to strike to read a certain genre. So, it finally hit me Fall of 07' and, after reading, I texted them all with a "You're right! I loved it!" I wanted to reread this and refresh my memory before watching the Hulu series. I listened to the Audible version, narrated by Claire Danes, which was excellent!
If I could give this 6 stars I would. This book will stay with me for the rest of my life, and I will keep coming back to it many times.
