What an exceptional novel. The first time I read it some 7 years ago, I gave it 4 stars. This time 5. I savored every line. It's written so beautifully with such vivid rich descriptions. Also such a timely novel given the current political climate. So many read the classic dystopian novels 1984 and Brave New World (as I just did again this past month), but this book is written IMHO so much better and considers gender as a central focus. My heart skips a beat remembering reading this book. Not a beat of love, but of fear for humankind (and particularly womankind) because I know that ID cards aren't that far away, and if they're not far away, then segregation by fertility can't be much further.

My girlfriends at work, all in the English dept (I'm Social Studies), kept telling me that I would love this book. I bought it and put it on my shelf and there it stayed for months. The mood has to strike to read a certain genre. So, it finally hit me Fall of 07' and, after reading, I texted them all with a "You're right! I loved it!"
