I read this for book group. I've always admired Angelou and loved I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Seeing her talk when I was in college in their 1990s was inspiring. This book was ok though. I enjoyed reading it but it was definitely a book written late in her career. It had some really wonderful parts that made me think about motherhood, how we judge mothers, how we as women can be both children of mothers and mothers ourselves at the same time. This book is the story of a girls love for her mother and how that love develops and grows. Their relationship is sometimes complicated but is told in a simple and direct way. Maya Angelou's voice is clear in these pages.
