The debut of Rushdie was a fantasy novel which follows Flapping Eagle to Calf Islandlooking for his sister Bird Dog. Flapping Eagle has the gift of immortality which really is not something he desires but it makes it possible for him to make it to Calf. Calf is where people who have immortality go to live. The story touches on a variety of mythology of Sufi, Hindu, Christian and Norse and many concepts and philosophy. It was not well received but it isn't hard to read. It's not Rusdie's best but

I was disengaged from the start, found the philosophical musings muddled and the plot nonsensical. I will try Midnight's Children again when it is the last 2001 book left to read. I dislike the comparison with Murakami, whom I enjoy. I think this is because Murikami's descriptions are so vivid that he positively sweeps you along with the story, however fantastical it turns out to be. I found Rushdie turgid.

In this story, a boy called Flapping Eagle becomes immortal in order to find his sister, and finds himself on a magical island inhabited by immortals drawn from the rest of the world to live among their own kind. A strange creature called Grimus has some sort of power over the people on the island, and some of those people have been nursing growing hatred for Grimus by the time Flapping Eagle arrives. They maneuver him into taking on Grimus for them, to destroy his power.
