This is a book that people seem to either love or hate. I loved the beginning - it was the first time in a long time I have desecrated a book with a highlighter pen, because I wanted to be able to go back to certain epigrams: e.g. the difference between men's attitude to sex and women's: "Wasn't it the difference between visiting and having visitors: if you had to, you could visit everyone, but you didn't allow everyone into your home."

Mulisch created some excellent, credible characters in a long novel with, for the most part, an entertaining story. Most of the story takes place in Holland, a couple sections in other countries. It has supernatural elements, but only sparingly used, which is a good thing in my opinion. The characters and the third-person narrator talk of, and think about, the characteristics of people and their history in mostly engaging ways. If it were about half as long I might rate it five stars out of five
