This book is not an easy read. It is set in Hungary in the 1980's. A "circus" arrives in a small town and many outsiders are attracted to it, despite it only having a stuffed whale to exhibit. Somehow, the exhibition of a enigmatic Prince promotes a riot, people are senselessly killed and property wontonly destroyed. The setting is winter and the cold is relentless. A village whose residents seem to largely dislike one another, hints of plans in the making, a growing sense of menace that eventually erupts. Page-long sentences, few paragraphs and even fewer chapter breaks, a plethora of words in inverted commas for reason unknown, several pages describing the hammering of a nail. A very hard book to read. I persisted out of stubbornness at first, and then because I needed to know what the hell was going on. I'm still not entirely sure. ...more
