What Members Thought

“Anyone whose goal is 'something higher' must expect someday to suffer vertigo. What is vertigo? Fear of falling? No, Vertigo is something other than fear of falling. It is the voice of the emptiness below us which tempts and lures us, it is the desire to fall, against which, terrified, we defend ourselves.

I liked the first part of the book: It was almost a long list of examples of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s language philosophy and language “games. Kundera’s characters has a long list of words that are mutually misunderstood. Very impressive. I have never seen anything so well “under-their-skin.

This book was loaded with elements that usually turn me off: a womanizing major character, lots of philosophizing, dream sequences, fairly graphic sex scenes, perspective that jumps around in time and narrator, and worst of all dog death. But somehow it all worked beautifully and I can totally see myself rereading it, even the final dog chapter. I will certainly never see bowler hats the same way again.

This was a beautifully written book, full of keen observations about humanity, including the many contradictions that can exist within people, the longing for love, the stifling entrapment of committed relationships, and the thrill of conquests and the forbidden. This is definitely going on my favorites shelf. Every page was thought provoking and it is a masterpiece.
