This very modern-day novel reminded me somewhat of the style of Virginia Woolf, esp her "The Waves", though it's much longer and the jumps between times/ places/ characters much more frequent. It's sometimes difficult to determine which of the main characters is being referred to, so it's a challenging read. Often however, there are wonderfully creative phrases and plotlines that kept me wanting to read on. ...more

I am clearly in the minority here and it doesn't surprise me. I read this because it's on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list and I have found that it's not infrequent to come across one that just doesn't suit my reading interests and/or abilities. This one didn't but bowing to the wonderful reviews of other readers, please don't put much faith in my review. It just wasn't my cup of tea.
