So at first, I had a vague sense I’d read this, but I think I was just recalling The Rocking-horse Winner by Lawrence. I didn’t love it - Glimpses of the Moon by Wharton was the previous book I read before this and though it was twice as long I flew through that one. This was a bit of a slog for the first half, which is saying a lot considering the short length. What a strange story. I spend a long time trying to figure out what was going on. I am not sure I understand the ending. I prefer a book to have at bit more ending, so I as a reader know that I have understood the text in the right way.
The writing was surprisingly modern in places. Many chapters ending with cliff-hangers. I thought that was a newer invention. But now, having looked it up, I know that it dates back to Homer's Odyssey. ...more
