A good ole ghost story (or is it?). The book opens on Christmas Eve with several characters sitting around the fire listening to the story of a young governess. The governess takes a new position in charge of two children and soon begins to see ghosts of two former employees from the children's home.
It was not my favorite of his books but I enjoyed it. James, as usual, is a master at getting inside the heads of his characters. He leaves it up to the reader to draw his/her own conclusion ...more

THE classic ghost story.
A semi-psychological story that gives you ghost "hauntings" galore. The story is great and I understand why it is a classic but I guess I just don't love James' wordy style of writing. Also, I never enjoy large blocks of text it makes reading drag on.
I made sure to squeeze this quick novella in before "Haunting of Bly Manor" starts up on Netflix since it is based on this book (& some of James' other ghost stories but I probably won't get to those this year).

For Week 44 of ATY READ, I fled the slog of Tress and dove into The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. This haunting tale—a governess, two eerie kids, and ghosts (or are they?)—delivered the unsettling chill I craved. The ambiguity creeps under your skin, and James’s prose twists the tension tight. After my last read’s frustration, this was a perfectly spooky reset.
