Update for reread in Feb 2020: I really enjoyed the wit and humor throughout this book. Despite the poverty and the sadness of so many events in this book it is still quite funny. The ridiculousness of a couple of the characters was so entertaining.

Cannery Row is a series of vignettes about Doc and a group of characters that reside in Monterrey, California in an area called Cannery Row. Cannery Row is “…a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light�..� made up of whores, pimps, gamblers or saints, angels, martyrs depending on how you want to look at it. Doc is one of the key characters and is called Doc because he is college educated and is running a business collecting marine animals and other animals for college research and use.

Although John Steinbeck novels are light on plot, they are heavy on social commentary, a sense of place, and violence (which is kept at a low boil, and doesn't spoil the book). Cannery Row is peopled with an array of colorful characters, whom we get to know and love.

Loved it! I especially loved the pace of the story and the descriptions.
