I read this in high school and absolutely despised it. It is impossible to feel sympathy for the main character or to get involved in the plot line. That being said, I was young when I read this, so perhaps I didn't get the whole picture. I am not against re-reading it, but will say my first time around, it was one of the few books I absolutely hated in high school. ...more

Easily the most stressful book I have ever read. Wright wrote that he wanted to write a novel about black experience that people would have to "face...without the consolation of tears." And he definitely succeeded. Very powerful and compelling but sometimes nauseating. ...more
