I'm not going to rate this because it's obviously one of the great novels of the 20th century but I didn’t find it an enjoyable reading experience at all. It's a historical novel, the story of a civil war that took place in north-east Brazil at the end of the 19th century. This is an epic novel set in the backlands of Brazil decades ago. It's rather overlong in my opinion,But has an excellent story and well-developed interesting characters. It's unusual in that it has no single main character- the main character seems to shift as the story progresses and at times there really is no main character. ...more
