Miriam settles as an independent young woman, working as a dentist's assistant and living in a boarding house. She wrestles with feelings of inadequacy while relishing the opportunity to learn through attending lectures. Sometimes Richardson writes about feelings which absolutely echo thoughts that I might have had, but I felt that there were passages in these volumes which I had trouble identifying with at all.
