While I’m usually not a fan of paranormal books, I really enjoyed this one. Excellently written, a good pace and interesting characters/plot. The only minus is that the first person narrative sometimes shows the age of the book .

I am still not sure what I think of this story. James held my interest in what the protagonist, a very young governess, was thinking and what her motivations were for the way she behaved and the decisions she took. On the other hand, ghost stories bore me and I was impatient to find a rational explanation for the mysterious appearance of ghostly figures. I did not find the ending satisfactory. The climax was not explained and I was left wondering what I was supposed to take from the story. Maybe

What a strange story. I spend a long time trying to figure out what was going on. I am not sure I understand the ending. I prefer a book to have at bit more ending, so I as a reader know that I have understood the text in the right way.
The writing was surprisingly modern in places. Many chapters ending with cliff-hangers. I thought that was a newer invention. But now, having looked it up, I know that it dates back to Homer's Odyssey. ...more
