With yet another spin on historical WWII material, this one explores the houses that the Nazis set up during WWII to churn out more "pure" babies. Some women were sent here by their families and spouses, and others were recruited. This was all called the Lebensborn program and had a dark underbelly, as many Nazi programs turned out to have upon further research. Many of the babies were sent out to be adopted, and others disappeared.

4.5 stars. A must read for readers of WWII historical fiction. This focuses on a young woman torn from her family, ending up in the Lebensborn Program. Not as one of the women living in that baby factory to birth Arian babies for the appeasement of Hitler and Himmler, but as a nurse taking care of the newborns. While I have read about the Lebensborn program previously, The Sunflower House made a bigger impression on me than other books. The author, Adriana Allegri, filled the story with fully three-dimensional characters, situations, and plot lines that enabled me to feel fully immersed in the story. I could picture Karl, Allaina, Rilla, Berta, and others as though they were in the room with me. There was appropriate tensions created, sad moments, small and meaningful victories over evil. ...more
