This book will be with me for a very long time!
This was a book of tears,
a book of holding tight to the things that matter beyond possessions.!
a book of history!
a book about winners and losers!
but mostly a book about staying alive when that was the hardest thing to do.
I will never be as strong as the nightingale sisters...but I am happy to have read their story... fiction or not!

It was ok. I think my experience of reading this book suffered because I have already read so much (better) fiction and nonfiction about the time period that it felt utterly predictable. From the moment the best friend's name was Rachel. I can definitely see why others liked it--and if you did like it, you might also like Gone to Soldiers by Marge Piercy or Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein.

So very good. The author smashed it with this novel. It made me cry a lot (and not many books do). So many great things in this story - detailed family dynamics, the experiences of women and children in wartime, the acknowledgement of rape and torture of women as war crimes, nuanced 'bad guys'. Keen to read more of Kristin Hannah's work.
