Book 1 in the Night Huntress World. In the heroine鈥檚 world, this book takes place a year after At Grave鈥檚 End, although (of course) the events of Destined for an Early Grave have already happened.

This book is about Denise MacGregor and Spade (aka Charles). Denise has been branded by a shape-shifter demon (Raum) to find and return to him Nathaniel (a distant family member of Denise, who acquired powers from Raum and never paid up). And in Raum鈥檚 mind, it鈥檚 finally time that Nathaniel pay his pri Book 1 in the Night Huntress World. In the heroine鈥檚 world, this book takes place a year after At Grave鈥檚 End, although (of course) the events of Destined for an Early Grave have already happened.

This book is about Denise MacGregor and Spade (aka Charles). Denise has been branded by a shape-shifter demon (Raum) to find and return to him Nathaniel (a distant family member of Denise, who acquired powers from Raum and never paid up). And in Raum鈥檚 mind, it鈥檚 finally time that Nathaniel pay his price. If Denise doesn鈥檛 find Nathaniel then Raum will kill the rest of her family. The longer it takes for Denise to find Nathaniel the more she will grow into a demon herself. There is only one way to find Nathaniel. That is to enlist a vampire鈥檚 help. She doesn鈥檛 want to involve Bones and Cat as she doesn鈥檛 want them to get hurt. But, even if she did, their numbers are disconnected and they are currently somewhere in New Zealand. So, she calls Spade, the only other vampire she has a number for. He agrees to help her, albeit reluctantly. The last time Denise saw Spade was at the end of At Grave鈥檚 End when he took her home after her husband, Randy, murdered at Cat and Bones鈥� house in Canada. As Spade helps Denise find Nathaniel and protect her from Raum, he develops feelings for her, and eventually Denise becomes only the second human woman he has ever loved. But, can Spade find Nathaniel and protect Denise- even from herself as she becomes less human every day?

Fans of Ms. Frost series will be delighted with the return (near the end of the book) of characters such as Bones, Cat, Ian, and Mencheres. I enjoyed this book immensely. I laughed out loud to several funny parts in the book, which reminded me of Ms. Frost鈥檚 first two books in the Night Huntress series. I gave this book 4 stars, even though I LOVED Spade, is because Denise was a little whiney, and a little bit slow in understanding Spade鈥檚 intentions towards her. But, Denise changed near the end of the book, in my opinion, for the better.

Well I'm not really sad that I let this one sit on my shelf so long before reading it.

The Story:

Spade is friends with Bones, and has been since they were both human. Denise is friends with Cat and has been since Cat's 4 year separation from Bones. Full disclosure- I never liked Denise. More on that later.

The Good:

What I really liked was the fact that I got answers to two questions I've always had, that almost made a lot of the crap worth it! Almost. The two questions were:

What I really liked was the fact that I got answers to two questions I've always had, that almost made a lot of the crap worth it! Almost. The two questions were:
1. What happened to Timothy? The fourth friend who was turned, the one that actually wanted it. (Turns out he has disappeared in search of Cain and is presumed dead as none of the friends have seen him in over 80 years.)
2. Who is actually Spade's sire?

The Bad & The Ugly
Let's face it besides the good most of this book was both bad and ugly. Denise, who I freely admit I never liked. I found her arrival in the series awkward and odd but was ok with it when I thought she'd disappear from the world like Timmie or Noah. She was just part of the vehicle to reunite Cat & Bones. But then her and her husband were still around, then he was killed and then she wanted nothing to do with anything vampire. Except for that one random night in the last book, you know so there was a reason for her to have Spade's cell phone number. What's more is that there is nothing interesting about Denise. She's a whiny heroine, that is obsessed with repeating tall the faults of things. "He's spending too much money helping me." "I want nothing to do with the supernatural world." "I was a wimp and a chicken and I let everyone get killed." Boo Hoo. Now she is branded by a demon and in order to save herself she must find her relative that cheated the demon his payment. and she has to keep being "so strong" and "so brave" while dealing with the demon essence that has been put into her. Except when she is being stupid and pigheaded and almost getting herself and everyone around her killed because she won't let the people she involved actually help her, but whatever.

Then there is Spade. My biggest pet peeve is when badass characters get all mushy because of love. Maybe because you never get Bone's POV you don't see it, but man Spade gets sappy constantly. He lacked that awesome vampire edge to his feelings and suddenly badass Spade is love sick Spade. And it doesn't match the Spade we have come to know. He has never expressed discontent with his life in prior book. Also he has never expressed distain for humans, not like he seems to show at the beginning.

More than anything though, there was no chemistry. Sure it's written, but you don't really feel like it's true. Overall, not a success, but I'm happy it's behind me and I can move forward now with the series and it will hopefully get better. Heaven help us all if we have to live through Ian's story. ...more

Denise MacGregor knows all to well the dangers of the vampire world. Her last foray there ended in the death of her husband so since then she has shunned the vampire world, including her best friend Cat Crawfield. When a demon shapeshifter marks her and threatens her family, Denise has no choice but to reconnect with it. She calls Spade, a mysterious vampire who has been fighting his attraction to her since they met and together they must fight to save Denise and her family.

I really wanted to like this book because I enjoyed the Night Huntress books so much. About 戮 of the way through the book, I started checking to see how many pages were left because I was ready for the book to end. The only reason I finished it was loyalty to the 1st four books.

It was another fantastic visit to Frost's world. Loved seeing Bones and Cat again, and loved how the story of Spade and Denise developed. The end wasn't unexpected, but still satisfying. I look forward to more of these "side" stories! ...more

This is the first book I have read by Ms. Frost. She is recommended by some of my favorite writers so I thought I would give it a shot. Well paced and great dialog. I plan to read the rest of the series.
