This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I've been in love with the Ender books for a decade now. My only complaint has been for Xenocide, a necessary, but extremely boring book. Now it saddens me to say I have another complaint.

The book that was meant to tie together the end of the Shadow series and the beginning of the Speaker series and answer all the question we still had. It does nothing. It answers all the questions we didn't care to ask. Adds conflict where there didn't need to be, making the mass of the book. While the confli I've been in love with the Ender books for a decade now. While the conflict we wanted, between Ender and Beans missing child, is dealt with in a single chapter leaving us disappointed and wishing he had left it alone all together. And then for him to actually rewrite chapter 15 of Enders Game to fit the storyline of THIS book. I can't think of anything more insulting or blasphemous for the fans of the series.

Mr. Card this was a let down. Since you're currently in the habit of rewriting stories I have a few suggestions. Get rid of the conflict with Admiral Morgan, this is no adversary for Ender to waste so much time on. The romance between Ender and Alessandra is also wasted space. I believe you put this in here to qualm the discussion of Enders sexuality. Let people believe he's gay or not, most of us will look at him as asexual or at least disinterested in those desires. Put more into the hardships of establishing the first colony, there's plenty of room for interesting plot if you hadn't made every citizen of the planet perfect for living in a Utopian world. And finally. More conflict with Randall Firth/Achilles II/Arkanian Delphiki. He could have been a great character, perhaps even a stepping stone in the continuation of the shaddow series. You give this character the intelligence of Bean and still make the conflict an easy task for Ender. In contrast you wasted time on Admiral Morgan and the Toscana's.

In the end I can't suggest you read this book, but it's only going to be picked up by fans of the Ender series anyway, and nothing I can say would be able to convince them NOT to pick it up. I'm not angry, just disapointed. ...more

Great "sequel" to the Ender's game. Loved it. It fills in a lot of gaps in the original series of books. The ending was true Ender, he loves his enemy so much. Well, not really enemy in this case as it's more nuanced than that. ...more

Great book, I really love how well it fit in between the two books. And OSC's explanation of the very minute details that did conflict. He didn't try to come up with some unbelievable story to make minutia fit together, he simply gave two justifications 1) If this were non-fiction and written as history by historians there would be discrepancies 2) He wrote the other books a long while ago and has since grown as an author and story teller, he was wrong then and right now. It was okay....started pretty good, but then characters that were developed were done away with as Ender travels to different places...there was never any steady plot to the entire novel which just confused me as to what I was reading. I think this book was just meant to tie up lose ends and make all the other books make more sense, but that makes it a random book..hope Speaker for the Dead is better.

Let me put it this way: when I bought this book I was in the middle of another, so I stashed it in my bookshelf... at the end of all the other Ender books because I was unsure of whether or not it would truly belong in the series.
