Wow, gripping. A bit long winded and not so sure if I bought the romance aspect, but what a compelling story. This definitely needs a sequel!

I went into this one knowing there was a cliffhanger and without a publication date in sight for the next installment. Why? I can't really say except that the reviews were all over the place (even among the book buddies' reviews I respect and follow the most frequently)and curiosity just got the best of me.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this one. I almost thought it would end up in my dnf pile, not sure that I wanted to read about the whole drug aspect. However I was able to look past that, was more drawn in by the ties that everyone had and how those in the drug trade rationalized why they were doing what they were. I felt sorry for them, they didn't really want to be in it, but didn't think that they deserved any better.

My heart has been ripped out. Then it was stomped on. Then set on fire and the ashes blown furiously to the wind. I don't think I can even write much of a review right now. All the other reviews about what an emotional roller-coaster this book takes you on are absolutely spot on. You FEEL every character in this book. I didn't love this book as much as I expected to--I liked the premise very much and the latter third of the book was great, but there was a long, long stretch where not nearly enough was going on. I kept putting this book down and almost abandoned it twice before it finally started to kick in. I'm not sure I would have continued if it hadn't been for all the rave reviews. The female lead character's reactions were strange and didn't seem realistic given the circumstances, especially d 3.5 stars. I didn't love this book as much as I expected to--I liked the premise very much and the latter third of the book was great, but there was a long, long stretch where not nearly enough was going on. I kept putting this book down and almost abandoned it twice before it finally started to kick in. I'm not sure I would have continued if it hadn't been for all the rave reviews. The female lead character's reactions were strange and didn't seem realistic given the circumstances, especially during the first two thirds of the book.

I did cry when one of the characters was killed, but felt oddly detached at the end, when I know I normally would have been gushing tears. I can't pinpoint why, except perhaps that I never quite bonded with Emily.

The action scenes were well-drawn and felt real, and the book really picks up in the latter third. The scenes involving the underworld characters were well-done and menacing.

Despite the issues I had with this book, I'll check out the sequel, if there is one. The author definitely can create good characters; the others all made sense to me and were vividly drawn and believable. I just had a hard time buying Emily (I explain why in the spoilers section).

This started well, I liked the writing style. But it did move slow, five chapters in I was starting to wonder if anything was going to happen. By chapter seven I was skimming.
