I hate being so down on anything by Gaiman, but this just wasn't the book I thought it was going to be.
I thought it was going to be an adult collection, but the writing style seems more suited towards the lower end of the YA scale or even Middle Grade. The blurb describes it as a "novelistic arc" so I thought it would be written in a more adult oriented novelistic prose style.

This was okay. It was a straight retelling of Norse mythology, kind of like those Victorian retellings of Shakespeare or Greek mythology.
Gaiman obviously gets a lot of inspiration from the myths (he wrote the enjoyable Odd and the Frost Giants as a creative children's story set in the same world). His audio books are also read by him which is well worth a listen. He tells a great tale.
Unfortunately, it seems like Norse mythology can be broken down to
*Loki is a jerk (or 'crafty')
*the other gods ...more

Really wonderful retelling of some of my favourite stories.

Finally finished! Neil Gaiman makes Norse mythology as tolerable as it can be, but it is still a vile and terrible business.
Tom Hiddleston and Marvel aside, I should have remembered how much I hated Thor before the movie, and why.
