For better or worse, this was a very educational YA novel.
First, I didn't know anything about the popularity of lesbian pulp fiction in 1950s America. Movie adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's "The Price of Salt is my only exposure to this genre.
Second, I knew even less about "lavender scare," a mass campaign in the same 50s to find and fire gay people from government jobs, on the grounds of them being assumed to be morally corrupt communist sympathizers.

For a more in-depth review watch:
I found this book very disappointing. The characters felt very flat and the story was slow and at times boring. I never felt connected to Abby or Janet and at no time did I care about them. The only part of the story that felt compeeling were the pulp fiction that Abby reads however those part were too sparse to save this novel for me.
I received an eARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ...more
