Brings back the feeling of first love with complete clarity. Such an important book about racism and privilege.

Snagged a copy of this at the Children's Librarian dinner during Book Expo and hearing the author speak about writing this book and how personal this story is to her was such a special experience. The story follows Shirin navigating a post-9/11 world as a hijab wearing teenager at a new high school. It may take place in 2002 but it is as relevant as ever, with our current political climate. So much excellence here -- especially the depiction of racism and personal choice in the face of it. The author is able to make the reader feel just how scary it was/is to be a Muslim American in post 9/11 America. Reading it was a suspenseful and frightening experience. The love story felt like Eleanor & Park to me. Very glad I read this.
