I really struggled with this book, and not because of the actual story. I love reading historical fiction and novels about WWII. I especially appreciate a fresh take or aspect of the war I am unfamiliar with. This book gave me that.

Beautiful, brutal, heartbreaking story. It's about fighting for freedom and striving to survive. I love when historical fiction opens my eyes to a past event I didn't know. The occupation of Malaysia, first from Brittan and then Japan.

3.5 ⭐️ rounding up. A bit slow to start, flew through the middle, ending felt a bit rushed. There’s so much European setting WW2 historical fiction, so I really enjoyed learning about Malaya. I thought the Cecily/General and Jasmine storylines were really well done.
