This is honestly my new all-time favorite book. When I bought the book, I was drawn to it simply because I thought it was about a dog. It was about so much more than that!

Enzo, the dog, tells the story from his point of view looking back over his life. He lives with Denny, a race car driver who adopted him when he was a puppy, Denny's wife Eve and their daughter Zoe. Enzo longs to be a human and knows that in his next life, he will be reincarnated as a man. He studies as much as he can in this l

I love this book.

If I could give one book to everyone I know, a book that would represent me on their shelf of Good Books, this would be the one that I would pick. I am not a huge fan of racing, but I do love my dog! I could not help but read this book with her tucked in closely by my side. And, more importantly, I love the reality, that good things do happen to those who wait. There are so many trials and tribulations, but we just have to keep our eyes on the prize!

Plus, I LOVE Seattle! And, I

A beautifully written novel told through the eyes of Enzo, a dog, who firmly believes his soul is human, and his next incarnation will be as a man. It is a story about holding fast to your dreams and keeping your promises. The underlying thread is tenacity, hope and wit. I found enormous inspiration in how the racing lessons and dog lessons can be applied to life. At a time where everyone is talking about the power of positive thinking, this actually feels like it sticks. Be prepared to laugh ou ...more

I've never read a novel about dogs and certainly none with a dog as main character, but after reading this one I know I've read the best one in its genre. The highly intellectual dog Enzo grabbed me from the first line and never ever let me go; not even after finishing the book.
There are only few books that take me into their story as if I'm one of them. Actually, apart from The Art of Racing in the Rain, only Harry Potter and Fear and Trembling succeeded. I guess that places Garth Stein among

I loved this book. It's funny, touching, insightful and has changed the way I speak to my dog. I'm a fan of open-wheel racing, os I thought it would be interesting, but it's a very small part of the book. I've passed this on to a number of my friends, and they all loved it too. It's a really easy read. ...more

I laughed, I cried!
I really appreciated the {different} book that this way. What an original idea Stein had, and then he added on to that, writing a wonderful story line filled with emotion.
I also really enjoyed the short chapters and easy reading, it made the book easy to put down and pick back up; even though I didn't want to put it down.

I reread this for a book group and still loved this book. The narrator, Enzo, is a dog, whose perceptions of his family and the world at large raise a lot of philosophical questions about life. I laughed and cried. It is a memorable book.
