Ocean Vuong writes in such a poetic and lyrical way. His writing is really beautiful. This however is a story that touches upon many painful and tragic circumstances. The main character, Little Dog comes to the US w/his Mother and Grandmother from Vietnam. This was when the Vietnam War was going on and it was extremely difficult just to survive. Our Drift book club members found Ocean Vuong's memoir, aka letter to his illiterate mother, to be not only very powerful in its theme but its language. The blend of Vuong's poetic style with his prose created some truly impactful scenes. In particular, Vuong's examination of what it means to be American provoked a lot of reflection and discussion.
