Some wonderful reviews here on this work already succinctly encapsulate what a remarkable tale this is from one of the masters of literature, Mr. Tolstoy, but I thought I would offer some words of praise as well. I remember reading this story a few times when it was part of the collection in our high school literature book back in the day, but I don’t think this story had as much impact on me then as it does now reading it some years later.

The title story finished 13 July 2023 - 2.5 stars

The back cover says James Joyce considered this the world's greatest story. I personally think that is too much praise.

I found it a quite simple story with a fairytale-like quality. It kept reminding me of the Grimm fairy tale (view spoiler)
