What Members Thought

I usually love any of the I-moved-to-Paris books, and was eager to read "Paris in Love."
However, this publication was only vaguely about Paris: it was simply recycled FB posts about her family life (dog goes on a diet, I had delicious soup today, blah blah). I trudged through 93 pages and then had to stop. It was painfully annoying reading. Couldn't she have put a LITTLE effort into this book?

I had some reservations at first when I read James' intro, in which she wrote that the book is a collection of expanded tweets and Facebook updates, but her tweets are more amusing and insightful than most. Although there were many times when I wished she had expanded further, I often found myself laughing out loud.
There are a few threads that run through the book and give it a sense of unity - the drama of her Italian mother-in-law's overweight chihuahua; her son's difficulties with math, as t ...more

I am kind of lazy about reviewing books here that I read, but wanted to comment on this one. I loved it! She is a good writer (not sappy, not cynical - not too corny and not fake blindly in love with France either, though she loved the year she and her family spent in Paris).
She has interesting observations about Paris and the French and spends the time to flesh them out, but they remain snippets, so quick to read each one and not overwhelming, but still packed with lots of good info about Fran ...more

I absolutely loved this book especially as it mirrored so much of what I experienced while living in Paris for six years. The unique little vignettes that Ms. James wrote brought smiles and memories to me. For anyone who has lived in Paris or hopes to just visit there some day, this little gem is must reading. Ms. James has included lots of addresses for buying all sorts of things and for eating out. When you do get to take that trip to Paris, take along a copy of this great book and your travel

Quite possibly my favorite memoir about living in Paris.
