Over a hundred and fifty years into their voyage, the inhabitants of a generation starship are only a decade out from the Tau Ceti star system. Despite the massive size of the ship, delicate ecological cycles have been slowly deteriorating over the decades. After arrival, more serious problems crop up with the colonisation effort. I picked up this book on the strength of 'best of year' list placement / reviews and likewise on the many of Robinson's books I've enjoyed in the past.
Regretfully, I plodded through this book more than anything. I didn't find the characters engaging, nor did I enjoy the framing device of the ship's AI serving as the Narrator. The plot was bloody depressing (maybe it's not a January in Winter read) and the resolution unsatisfying. The integration of some real world theories on isolated ecologies ...more
