I had always dismissed Kurzweil's theories about "strong" artificial intelligence to be wishful thinking but this book changed my mind. I'm not quite as optimistic about scaling things up to human adult levels, but reading this book gave me new found respect for his ideas and the evidence and theories he uses to back them up. I had no idea how powerful "hidden Markov models" are for solving problems, and Kurzweil makes a good argument that neocortical pattern recognition (essentially a form of p ...more

I enjoyed the interplay between human mind and artificial, and what makes them similar. Fun read.

I almost gave this book 4 stars due to the funny way in which he alternated between overly specialized technical language to overly dumbed-down language. But I really enjoyed and valued the book's contents enough to overlook this quirk.

Having always been interested in machine/artificial intelligence, it was great to get a big picture of the state of the art.

I think Google's recent acquisition of this man, will be looked back on as a important historical event.
