HOLY. HELL.

It's honestly astonishing sometimes how much a writer can improve just between two books. I had issues with Daughter of Smoke & Bone, chiefly the slow pace, the insta-love and the fact that nothing actually really happened, but all of these issues, ALL OF THEM, were completely obliterated in this book. This book is the OPPOSITE of slow-paced. It grips you from the very first page and does not let you go until after you've turned the final page.

The first book was, chiefly, a HOLY. HELL.

I had issues with Daughter of Smoke & Bone, chiefly the slow pace, the insta-love and the fact that nothing actually really happened, but all of these issues, ALL OF THEM, were completely obliterated in this book. This book is the OPPOSITE of slow-paced. It grips you from the very first page and does not let you go until after you've turned the final page.

The first book was, chiefly, a love-story. The writing was lyrical, the setting romantic, and the story saturated with the pain and pleasure of love between two impossible lovers. Days of Blood & Starlight, however, is decidedly not a love story. Yes, the romance elements are there, but this book is about war. It is about the futility of war, the horror of war, the endless vicious cycle of killing for soldiers who have forgotten what they are even fighting for. It was heart-breaking and intense to read about, but so, so gripping.

Despite the fact that Karou and Akiva are apart for the vast majority of this book, this is one of the most intense, gut-wrenching pairings I have ever read about. Yes, this book is about war, and it is also about how war can tear people apart, how love can endure even when the lovers themselves don't want it to. It's weird how I enjoyed their story better in this book, when they were apart, than in the first book, when they were together. Nonetheless, I'm rooting for them and their long-ago dream of peace so badly.

This book is also about hope. Hope is one of the main themes running throughout the story, and the book asks the question: what is stronger, despair or hope? Is there any place for hope in a time of war? If we have no hope left, is there any point in carrying on at all?

Also, THAT CLIFFHANGER, DAMN YOU. Cliffhangers should be banned. Except not really, because how would we make books exciting? Still, that was evil, Laini Taylor. Double evil.

Wow! I really like the first book in the series but I had no idea how good it was going to get!

The book did start off a little slow for me. I was anticipating the quick start that the first book had. But I think the pay off of reading on a couple of chapters was well worth it. This book was so good!

The message of this story is very important and, I think, relevant for the times we are in right now all over the world. There is so much hate and most of the people doing the hating probably don't ev ...more
