I enjoyed this much more than I expected. It's a pretty good retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I've read a few of Robin McKinley's books and this one was the quickest read. Granted the others were fantasy and deeply involved but the writing was way over the heads of the intended young adult audience. Beautiful writing a good version of it. I am just so bored of beauty and beast retellings in general that this soured me of it a bit, but it did stick well to the original story (although this beauty female is more plain than pretty), and the rose garden and library of course sounds gorgeous. Her father was more likeable in this version than many I've read and goes into a long backstory with two sisters before the story takes off.

One of my most favorite tales growing up, Beauty and the Beast, a story about seeing beyond appearances and the magnitude of love.
There were a few interesting parts added to the story that gave it a different air and gave Beauty more substance. Beast is a mystery and the details of his curse aren't revealed but they are neither the focus of the story nor the lesson learned.
