Dance when the moon sings, and don't cry about troubles that haven't yet come.

I鈥檇 heard about this series for over a year before I indulged. People raved on the Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance forums over it constantly, so who wouldn鈥檛 be curious? Shapeshifters aren鈥檛 really my thing, but Urban Fantasy, series, and good stories are, so I was eager to dive into it and join the 鈥渞aving鈥� crowds. Did it live up to my expectation?

From the start it鈥檚 clear that Mercy is now your ordinary female Dance when the moon sings, and don't cry about troubles that haven't yet come.

I鈥檇 heard about this series for over a year before I indulged. People raved on the Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance forums over it constantly, so who wouldn鈥檛 be curious? Shapeshifters aren鈥檛 really my thing, but Urban Fantasy, series, and good stories are, so I was eager to dive into it and join the 鈥渞aving鈥� crowds. Did it live up to my expectation?

From the start it鈥檚 clear that Mercy is now your ordinary female protagonist. It鈥檚 a refreshing change to go to someone without a massive chip on the shoulder. As a sweet natured gal, she鈥檚 also independent in an unusual career 鈥� owning an auto shop and repairing cars. She lives in a trailer by the more luxurious house of the town鈥檚 werewolf pack master, whom she loves to irritate and goad in all sorts of sarcastic ways. Being a different kind of shifter, she鈥檚 usually killed by the predators, but is under protection of sorts because of her history and connections. Wary, she keeps her distance as much as possible but must work with the alpha in this particular story.

The book lends plenty of chuckles when encountering the powerful, dominating alpha and his human teenage, and of course her pal Stefan, a vampire who keeps bringing in his van, painted like the Scooby Doo vehicle, for repair.

Not all is fun and games when an attack forces Mercy to go back to her hometown and face an old friend who turned betrayer (at least in her mind), she found out why he was really interested in her.

Really the story shines due to Mercy. She actually has common sense leading her around and is missing that massive bitch-chip on the shoulder so many other UF Protagonists have. Adam鈥檚 a bit dreamy and Stefan interests me, but frankly the story always squeaks by. It鈥檚 bland. The world feels unevenly structured when it comes to supernatural explanations and hierarchy. This could be since it鈥檚 the first novel, though, so waiting to see how it expands. The mystery is decent but takes a bit long to reach.

Briggs writes well 鈥� her dialogue is especially right on. She saves the suspense and excitement more toward the end for this one 鈥� which is a semi-risky move when it comes to a first novel in a series. If you鈥檙e interest holds, it gets better.

Overall this decent series appetizer left me wanting to read more, not really for the story, but for the melodrama in some of the character鈥檚 lives. All 鈥渓oveable鈥�, they have intriguing potential. Not every series starts with a bang, but as long as it gets there, then that鈥檚 the point of continuing and trying on for size right there.

Recommended for when you want some Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, and want to toss in some fun, elbow grease, engine oil, and a feisty, unique female. ...more

#1 in the Mercy Thompson paranormal series

I've heard good things about this kick-ass heroine, and I was not disappointed. I immediately connected with Mercy, liking her strength, her independence, and her acceptance of everyone around her without judgment. She is a happy and busy auto mechanic who just happens to be a walker, which means she's a coyote shape-shifter. She's been raised by werewolves, so she's also very familiar with that breed, and she happens to live next door to the local alpha ...more

I really liked this book. Because of its size, it was perfect to take on the bus (no, that's not why I loved it) and most mornings I was so involved in the book that I barely noticed we'd gotten to the terminal and a few times I'd look up just in time to get my stop.

Loved this book. I don't know why I resisted reading it for son long... but I'm glad I picked it for one of my challenge reads. I will admit that I usually like a little more romance in my books, and that's why I shy away fron UF, but this books was so well written and had so much going on I hardly missed the lack of romance. Plus there is Adam.... I will def. be reading the rest of the series, and I think I will be giving UF more of a chance in the future:) ...more
