I enjoyed NBC’s new Dracula series an inordinate amount. It was a fun, thrilling experience of storytelling and characterization. And it got me thinking that, despite happily watching various adaptations over the years, I’ve never actually read the original novel. What with it being public domain and all, I put the on my tablet and sat back to see how the original stacks up to its adaptations.

My enjoyment of Dracula nearly mirrored my enjoyment of another great gothic novel, The Phantom of the Opera. In both cases I quite enjoy the first half, but then the incessant histrionic displays of emotion—particularly that between lovers—slowly grind my patience away. The unrealistic and constant gallantry towards the porcelain women, the exclamations of courage and hand gripping and tears. It reminds me of the scene in Lawrence of Arabia when the British official mentions, off-hand, that T.E

In the last few weeks I read quite a few classics that I found to be of only average quality; meaning classics that I think everybody should read at least once because they have a deeper meaning, but which I probably won’t read/listen to again in the near future. I was prepared for another of those average classics, until I began to listen to the Dracula audiobook. This is one of those classics that can be counted in the category “provides entertainment, even after more than 200 years this stor
