Having enjoyed 'Waves of Mercy', I was intrigued when I heard that there would be a sequel. I had felt as if Anna's and Geesje's stories weren't quite finished, but understood from the author that she would not be returning to those characters. I'm glad she changed her mind!

You never know if a sequel will be as captivating as the first book in a series. Frankly, I couldn't imagine Lynn Austin topping the story she had spun in Waves of Mercy. But she did! Legacy of Mercy continues the story of Geesje and Anna in turn-of-the-century (19th to 20th) Michigan. I so appreciated being part of their continuing journey as both women navigate heartbreak, love, and loss. There are two stories in this book. It alternates between Anna in Chicago and her grandmother in Michigan. I did not enjoy the grandmother's story at all. She takes in a teenager who has tragically lost most of her family. There are pages and pages and pages detailing how depressing this is. I haven't read book one, Waves of Mercy. I do have it so there is no excuse. However, I didn't find myself lost in the story line. I will be reading book one very SOON!
Anna and I have a lot in common. I'm adopted and the story of my conception is not a happy one, so with every discovery she made about her family my heart cheered for her because she was answering questions about herself. William's family were annoying yet for the time period their behavior was spot on.

This story had so many facets to it - What is true love like, and is it important? Will our faith change our actions toward others? Should money and/or social status be a priority in life? How important is forgiving others? Christian historical fiction fans will not be disappointed in this beautiful plot.
