‘God made the world, said it was good, says Sheldon aloud. ‘Fine. But when did he re-appraise?

Eighty-two, Sheldon (Donny) Horowitz is a retired watchmaker who was a filing clerk during the Korean War, or so his wife Mabel told everyone all of their married life. He’s now a widower, living with his granddaughter and her husband in Norway.

Rhea is the daughter of their son Saul, who was killed in Vietnam before Rhea was born. Her mother was a casual girlfriend who quickly gave the baby to he

When you get to a certain age you can get by with anything, or so says Sheldon (our utterly delightful protagonist). Not that I have such experience, I try stuff but I don't get away with it.

A unique take on the hero's journey. In this case, the hero is an American suffering from dementia (maybe) on the run with the 8-year old survivor of a brutal attack in Norway where our hero is living with his daughter. Oh, yeah, the hero may or may not have been a sniper during the Korean War (he was, I think) and his sniper training and survival instincts kick back in with a vengeance.

I can see why this one so many awards.

Excellent story. Sheldon Horowitz is a fascinating character and the plot is thrilling and interesting. It is also a deeply philosophical tale that defies thriller-genre stereotypes.
