What Members Thought

This was a wonderful book. I LOVE Ed Kennedy. I thought the idea of this book was enlightening and heart warming. The story is about Ed. He thwarts a bank robber and saves the lives of his friends and bank customers. The scene is actually humorous. I giggled through it. Soon after the attempted robbery gone bad, Ed receives the ace of diamonds in the mail. It has 3 addresses on it. So begins the life of The Messenger. Through Ed’s adventure, he shares his life with his friends Ritchie, Marv, Aud

I so, so, so wanted to like this book, but for some reason I just could not get into any of the characters. I just couldn't find someone to like, I had never thought about it, but that appears to be my gateway into a book. I attach myself to one of the characters and live the story through them. That was not the case here, my husband really liked it, so maybe it just wasn't my type of read. Oh well, I will still read Zusak as I loved The Book Thief.

What a strange book. I didn't read about the author before picking up the book, so I missed that it was taking place in Australia. I figured it was England just from some of the slang, but the accent got so think I finally realized it was Australia, then double checked with the book jacket.
The main character is strong, the secondary characters interesting, but the story was a bit of a stretch. At the end I was frustrated with the whole thing, but kept reading because I had to know what happened ...more

This was a very different and original book! It was dark at times but I liked that it was also tender and funny.

I found this book to be very original. The series of tasks needing to be performed by "the Messenger" were varied and very heartfelt. It reminded me a bit of the movie (book) "Pay It Forward." Just like in The Book Thief not everything is spelled out and you really need to think while reading this book. It has some very endearing characters and some super sad and pretty mature situations. I had read that it wasn't actually originally marketed as a teen book, and I can see why.

This is a funny book about a young man who is not very well educated and is a cab driver. He witnesses a robbery and somehow survives to find that he is getting strange messages delivered on playing cards.
Through these cards/messages, he becomes more observant of people and their lives and takes steps to try to help them. Yet he doews not know who is sending the messages to him.
I'm not sure if I agree with some of the actions he takes but they do seem to right for his character. Most of them are ...more

Ed is a perfectly ordinary person living an ordinary life until one day he gets a playing card in the mail. The card has three addresses on it and soon Ed finds that people at those addresses need something. As Ed pushes himself to help others, both strangers and friends, he become more than ordinary. I really enjoyed reading this novel. I really liked all the characters and liked the variety of tasks that Ed tackled to complete the cards. I really appreciated the message that the author was try

This is so totally different from The Book Thief that I had a hard time getting into the characters and the swearing and the I'm-a-total-grunge-and-proud-of-it presentation. But gradually something happened and I found myself interested in Ed's life, and by the time he got to the Ace of Hearts tasks, I wanted things to work out for his friends. Not quite a 4* read, but much better than 3*
