What Members Thought

**3.5 stars**
Very interesting premise and the end was so freaking sad. The ethical situation behind the new Jar City gave me a lot of food for thought.
I didn't care much for Erlendur and the whole dynamic with his family. I also thought his bosses gave him a lot of leeway...if this had been set in the US, he would have needed a lot more evidence to go ahead with a lot of the things he did. Also, I listened to the book and couldn't keep the Icelandic names straight. When they mentioned a person, ...more

So far I have enjoyed the books in this series. There’s something rather depressing about life in Iceland. At least the life we hear about in Erlunder’s world. He’s divorced, doesn’t hear from his kids, and deals with stinky horrible deaths. And a small piece of me lives him. He’s miserable a lot and forgets to take care of himself. But I do enjoy his way of taking care of business and finding the “bad guys.

John McDonald's Travis McGee has always been my measuring stick for mystery sleuths. Move over Travis,Inspector Erlendur is in the house. The fact that the house is in Reykjavik and that the book has been translated to English is of little importance, what matters is Arnaldur Indridason pens a real who-done-it that doesn't slow down from the first page to the last. Dress for cold and rainy weather but do take the trip to Iceland to meet Erlender, the new anti-hero.

I just didn’t care about anything in this book. I couldn’t get interested in any of the characters - the protagonist Inspector Erlendur, his family and work colleagues, the murder victim, or any of the people interviewed in the course of the investigation.
The motivation for the crime was unusual, and the plot could’ve been interesting if everything hadn’t seemed to plod along so.
I won’t be looking for any subsequent books by this author.
