I love Angela Carter's stories - I love how, in this collection, she takes traditional fairy tales and rewrites them so that they are strange and beautiful but still so familiar. In particular, her various interpretations of Beauty and the Beast are wonderful. I think The Tiger's Bride is my favourite. It makes me sad that Angela Carter is mostly read in academic circles now, because I think she was incredibly skilled. This is a story collection I will dip back into again and again.

A superb collection of tales that take the themes and characters of well known (and some not so well known) fairy tales and folk lore and re-work them into the atmospheric, dark, gothic, emotive tales they traditionally were rather than the happy smiley Disney version we know of today. My mother gave me these dark fairy tales as a holiday gift last year. We promptly read one of the short ones aloud and were laughing at the dark twist the story took. The writing here is excellent and these tales will stick with me for a while. I'm glad to have had a chance to enjoy these.
