The best thing about this book was the way it presented the early days of railways in the UK - the way the country was divided into the enthusiasts and the terrified, and those who opposed the compulsory purchase of land and the destruction of the peaceful countryside. If they could have seen how much worse roads would have become 150 years later, they might have embraced the tracks after all!

I enjoyed this, but not so much that I'm likely to rush out to read the others in the series. The protagonist, the other characters, and the plot were all fine. But none of them stands out to me as really terrific, either. Probably the best thing about the book is the historical setting and all the detail about the beginning of the railway system in England. For those who have a special interest in trains, this book and the rest of the series would be very enjoyable.
