I find it interesting how often the end of a book will change my feelings for the entire book - sometimes completely reversing the feeling I had while reading the beginning and the middle of the story. I can't decide yet if that's what the ending of The Whistling Season has done for me. It might have brought my 5-star rating down to a four, or it might have made me wish for six stars. I can't tell yet.

I found the description on this book to be misleading, as it seems that it will be a book about Rose, a women who came to Montana through a newspaper ad and shakes things up. In fact Rose is a minor character that flits and in out of scenes, but it really not the heart of the book.

In the Doig books that I've read the historical west always seems to get encroached upon by progress. Here it's the nostalgia of the one-room school house and the widower and his boys and the easterners who change their lives.
