I know my preferences are no secret-- flawed heroes, charming thieves, gorgeous and intricate worldbuilding-- and A Darker Shade of Magic has all three. But it didn't get five stars because it's perfect-- far from it. I gave it five stars because once I started reading, I found myself swept along in the thick of it like a boat in a fast current-- bobbing from one event to the next with no idea how I got there, but absolutely loving the ride. I liked this book. The worlds were interesting and unique and I really liked the characters. The story kept my attention, but it did not seem as deep as I would have liked. The evil characters are very evil and the good characters are mostly very good. It seemed to check all the boxes for a fun fantasy adventure but did not go beyond that. I will definitely continue the series as I found it a fun read, I just thought it could have been a lot more.

The premise sounds good, the reviews are enough to make me want to run out and buy a copy, but I found myself bored with it. The hype surrounding this books continues to cause me to question myself, and wonder if I should try it again someday in the future.
