This is the first book in the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael, a monk at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Shrewsbury, England, in 1137. In this story, one of the monks. Prior Robert, is desirous of having a saint's relics at this abbey. He has been searching around for an available (yet unclaimed) saint and has found one in Wales.

I didn't have to read very many pages of this book before I knew that I loved Brother Cadfael! This series by Ellis Peters has been recommended to me many times by Dick Francis fans listing some of their other favorite mystery series. On the face of it, this series doesn't seem to be anything like a Dick Francis mystery. But I can see why it is a favorite of so many who also love Dick Francis. I love this series. I know I have read this first book several times before, although not for a long while, but I really wanted to read the whole series in order so was more than happy to start again. Cadfael is a Benedictine Monk whose life experience and knowledge, as well as his level-headedness and a good dose of scepticism, help him to solve a murder which occurs when members of his order travel to Wales to collect the bones of St Winifred for their monastery.
