This book started out slow. I don't know if I give it five stars. Once Jaccob met the children and starting visiting them did the story pick up. I liked all the children that were featured. I liked that Jaccob came around and stood up for himself. I found it cute that all the headmistresses were named after birds. I read some of the previous reviews and I didn't find the romance between Jaccob and his grandfather's ex girlfriend to be all that strange. I mean she looks his age. She is just sixty ...more

I liked the originality of the story and writing style of the author - both of which kept me going through a story that often lost its grip on me. I didn't realize until the end that the story was built around the fascinating and eerie photographs - I had thought the photos were created for the story. I was in love with this book from the start...what is this they say about not judging a book by its cover?? This book is a work of art. The cover, pages layout, type, the old photographs, the concept...However the storyline and the writing didn't leave me with much at the end. It started off so promising too..

Having said all that, I would buy it and recommend it. It's a beautiful bo

7/10. Interesting story, but felt more like a set up (for a...trilogy?) than a complete, satisfying story in and of itself. Also felt like the photographs were more the point of the story than the story itself -- all the characters and the plot seemed almost like a justification after the fact. It's like the author was like, "hmm, what is the story behind each of these pictures, and how how best to tie all these stories together into one plot?" Has potential I think in the next book(s), hopefull ...more

I wanted to love this book. I really really tried to but I just couldn't get over how much I hated Jacob. I find it really difficult to like a book when I can't stand the main character. ...more
