3.5 stars... the beginning was slow, the 2nd 3rd was interesting, then the ending felt frantic.

Every page is filled with really cool ideas. Punishment factories. The remaking of bodies. Nourishment from eating dreams. Brilliant descriptions of locations and bits of the world. Humanoid insects, who communicate with scents (and sign language). Just really cool ideas bursting from the seams of this book.

But man, there are a lot of pages.

And a lot of the time I didn't really care about the characters or the plot of this story.

Perdido Street Station is about a bunch of characters on the fringes or outcast from society that come together to correct a mistake that threatens the city. This was a dense book that was not easy to read. The world Mieville creates is so different from our world that it took a lot of brain power just to imagine it in my head (despite the copious descriptions given).
